APPLE GRADING
PREMIUM APPLES: Nelson's Apple Farm selects the very best for the top of the line apples. These apples are hand chosen by our staff and meet or exceed the standards established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for U.S. Fancy. We package these apples in an attractive plastic bag with ventilation holes and a draw string. These apples can be stored in these bags in your refrigerator and will assist in keeping them fresh. The draw string also makes transporting of the apples to you car easier. This grade of apples is our best and the price is a little higher than our other grades, but the price is justified by their appearance and storage capabilities.
All apples should be stored in a refrigerator to help ensure freshness and superior flavor. The shelf life will be greatly reduced if apples are not refrigerated.
ECONOMY APPLES: These are apples Nelsons Apple Farm does not consider good enough to be classified as Premium apples. They may be a little smaller, may have a blemish or two on the surface, but are still a great buy. These apples will be priced at 25 - 30% below the Premium line and meet the quality of those apples found in many discount food stores. These apples will be displayed in paper bags with handles. The apples will be readily visible to view the quality in the bags. You will be able to determine what a good value this grade can provide.
UTILITY APPLES: This grade of apples does not meet the standards of either the Premium or Economy lines. You might say they are the "Charlie Browns" of the apple world. They may have been treated a little rough by the winds while on the trees which caused their surfaces to look less than perfect. They are still good apples that are free of insect infestation. They will taste great, but you may have to cut off that unsightly mark on the surface. These apples will be sold in larger quantities - generally in ½ bushel and full bushels. They will be displayed in baskets. The Utility apples are sold at 65 - 70% off the price of the Premium line. This grade is well suited for making apple sauce, pies or apple crisp, but can also be eaten fresh. The storage of this grade will be significantly shorter than either the Premium or Economy lines and should be consumed within a short time. |
